CHECKING OUT MAYAHUELApril 23, 2009
I checked out Phil Ward’s new tequila & mezcal bar, right down the block from Death & Co
On Tuesday night, after the Beefeater 24 launch event (more on that soon!) I traveled with a few bartender friends a few block over to Mayahuel. Mayahuel is Phil Ward’s (of Death & Co) new tequila and mezcal temple, officially opening on May 1. And I do mean temple, as that’s what you’ll feel like with all the beautiful stained-glass, pew benches, wrought iron and dark wood in the place. But of course the focus is the bar, with more tequila and mezcal than you knew existed, all candle-lit in holy-looking light. I didn’t get a chance to look at everything, as I was cozy in a banquette upstairs. I had a light and refreshing “Silver Wining” which is a mix of blanco tequila, orchard apricot and cava. I neglected to get the name of my friend Lauren’s drink, which was a smoky but slightly sweet cocktail served over pebble ice. Both were fantastic and we ended up switching half way through because we liked each other’s so much! While its all tequila and mezcal, the menu offers several different styles of drinks, including some tea infusions (Tea-killa!) so you’re bound to find something to suit your palate. Our server was very friendly and helpful, always important for sealing a return visit! So I recommend you pay a visit to Mayahuel and do a bit of worship to tequila. You’ll see it in a whole new light after experiencing this menu!
