CUERVO CUPApril 14, 2009

I adapted the Gordon’s Cup recipe to suit my taste for agave and a bottle of Cuervo Silver I hand on hand

I often make a savory cocktail called the Gordon’s Cup at the bar, but recently I discovered that I like it much better with tequila than it’s usual gin, rechristening it the “Mexican Cup”. My sister is also a new fan of the cucumber and lime concoction, which we had with Don Julio anejo over the weekend. But tonight I was home with a bottle of Jose Cuervo Silver tequila, so I tried it out with that. First off the recipe:

MEXICAN CUP
1 lime, cut into eighths
2 slices cucumber, cut into fourths
3/4 oz simple syrup
2 oz tequila
salt and pepper
Muddle lime and cucumber in a mixing glass, then add simple and tequila. Add cracked ice and shake briefly, then pour contents into a rocks glass. Grind salt and pepper on top and enjoy!

I like this drink with tequila because I feel the cucumber plays especially well against the agave base of tequila, and of course lime always goes well it. As I said I usually enjoy this with an anejo, but decided to give the Silver a try. I see Jose Cuervo Especial Silver as an attempt to get in on the tequila shot craze, as its very smooth and crisp (and the fact they outright promote it being consumed in a shot on their site). It obviously didn’t have the complexity as my anejo version, but the crispness played well being it’s an easy-drinking, warm-weather cocktail (as well as being easy on the pocket at about $15 a bottle). It also has a slight hint of black pepper, which fit right in with my S&P topping!
