Last night I attended a tasting of TRU Vodka, and left feeling quite impressed. Not only are they eco-conscious in ALL aspects of their business (unlike many jumping on the green bandwagon), but most importantly the vodka was superb! It wasn’t my first time tasting it, but it was the first time I got a chance to hear in-depth about their product and practices. Mitch Kaplan, their East Coast sales rep was so knowledgeable and shared a lot of great info about TRU and spirits in general.
So first about the vodka:
Their portfolio which is made up of the original straight style (distilled from organic wheat), and also lemon and vanilla infused vodkas. The straight style is textbook vodka- odorless and tasteless! Its neutral finish makes it great for cocktails. It allows the taste of the mixers to really shine, but you still get that 80 proof kick. The lemon flavor tastes like there is literally a lemon sitting at the bottom of the bottle. Unlike other flavored vodkas, there is no added sugar or artificial flavoring and it really makes such a difference! TRU uses local, organic (near their Monrovia, CA base) green market lemons and puts the lemon zest in the 190 proof distillate to give the vodka its flavor and color. Same process goes for the Vanilla, except they use hand-split organic Madagascar and Tahitian beans. Both are crisp and true to their respective flavors. While they also make an excellent base for cocktails, they are great on the rocks too.
Now about their environmental initiatives:
USDA certified organic, the recyclable bottle is made from 25% less glass than most premium vodka bottles, labels made of cornsilk paper and soy ink, recylable/biodegradable shrink tops & corks. And what I think is the coolest of all they plant a tree for every bottle sold, thru a partnership with Sustainable Harvest Intl. So far they’ve replanted 16,000 trees in the American rainforest! I don’t know about you, but knowing that sipping on a cocktail is helping reduce my carbon footprint is reason enough for another!

I also co-sign TRU Vodka, it goes down smother than Absolut without the bitter aftertaste. Who knew that organic could taste so good.
