Ron Abuelo is the latest import to join in the growing niche of aged sipping rums. Part of the Varela Hermanos porfolio, Ron Abuelo dates back 3 generations in Panama, but has just recently become available Stateside. The company owns its sugarcane site, from which they distill Ron Abuelo Anejo and 7 Year and then age them in oak casks.
I tasted the Anejo first, which I was really impressed with. This super-affordable (around $13) has a light amber color and a creamy vanilla nose. I loved the subtle hints of toffee and immediately thought this would be a great after dinner nightcap. Anejo is a supple rum, with a finish of sweet spice.
Next up was the 7 year, which has golden amber shade. This one has a thick caramel nose, with a slight touch of vanilla. The 7 year is more full-bodied than the Anejo but overall it’s medium-bodied, with a rich nut flavor. As opposed to the sweet spice finish of the Anejo, this has a lovely wood spice finish. The 7 year is also very affordable, at around $20. While the creaminess of the Anejo would make me pick it up before the 7 Year, at this price point I’d recommend trying both!
Welcome to the States Ron Abuelo, I have a feeling your fan club will be growing quickly!

I agree this is a good bang-for-your-buck aged rum. I recently created a pretty tasty cocktail for a political event in which I used Ron Abuelo, in a cocktail called the “Juan McCain,” inspired of course by John McCain. Ron Abuelo was perfect for this cocktail because it was aged, Panamanian, and of course Abuelo in Spanish means grandfather. You can check it out here, along with an Obama-inspired drink as well:
