Recently I got the chance to try a new luxury vodka (yes, another luxury vodka) hitting the market. Double Cross is distilled in Slovakia, using a diamond dust filter created by Double Cross CEO Malcolm Lloyd (he has a medical and engineering background). Lloyd enlisted Dr. Jan Krak, a master distiller from Slovakia who was been distilling vodka for decades. By combining his approach and Lloyd’s fancy filter, they believe they’ve hit the bullseye with Double Cross. I spoke with Lloyd at the tasting, and when I asked him why a new vodka in a flooded market, he said he believed the market was ready for something new, as long it was truly superior to the Grey Gooses, Belvederes etc, and he believes Double Cross is it. Others agree with him, as Double Cross received gold medals for both tasting and package design at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Lloyd & Co are clearly excited and passionate about their product, so I hope their warm reception to the market continues. Double Cross is distilled seven times, but is not lacking for personality. It has hints of citrus and white pepper, which makes it nice for sipping on the rocks with a lemon twist. I also tried their signature “Limonata Rose”, which is 2oz Double Cross, 1oz fresh lemon juice, 1oz limoncello and 1/4oz cranberry juice, shaken and strained into a martini glass. This one was quite tasty, a slightly more citrus-y version of a cosmo.
