As you may have read last week, I recently made my first visit to Clover Club (210 Smith st in Brooklyn). Being a Harlemite, I’d been meaning to venture to the recent Carroll Gardens addition, but sometimes Brooklyn just seems so very far! But the venture was 100% worth it, and I will definitely go back (and I’ve realized its not even that far!) When I asked Julie Reiner (of Flatiron Lounge/Pegu Club fame) what made her go to Brooklyn for her latest venture she told me she’s been wanting a place in Brooklyn for a long time and when she finally found the space on Smith Street she knew it was perfect. She likes that she can give the same attention to detail in the cocktails without the hectic hustle of a Manhattan place. There are a few details I really love about the place:
1) There is a big sign out front. You can’t miss it-no secret stairwell, no hidden door. I love a speakeasy-type entrance too, but some days I’m just not up for the hunt and it can be intimidating on your first visit to a place.
2) The menu is broken up into cocktail style sections (smashes, fizzes etc) and gives a quick history lesson on where that style of drink comes from and what makes it special. I think this is really helpful for anyone just getting into pre-prohibition cocktails, and it can help you decide what drink will suit you.
3) Julie & Co did a fantastic job on the decor. Its all dark wood with leather banquettes and a back library style room, but doesn’t come off as too gloomy. It has a beautiful glass front that lets light in and makes it appealing from the street.
