HARVESTING RYE AT TUTHILLTOWNJuly 5, 2009
The NY Chapter of the USBG made a day-trip to Tuthilltown Distillery to harvest some rye and taste some whiskey

Nothing like celebrating the 4th of July with some locally made booze! This weekend I made the trip with the NY chapter of the USBG to the Tuthilltown Distillery in Gardiner, New York. It’s now open for tours and tastings, check out the website for info.
We got the chance to cut down rye from their 7 acre field, which will make its way into the distillery and eventually into a bottle of Manhattan Rye! I’m sure I’ll be able to taste my bundle ![]()

It was really fun to see a small, family-run distillery in action, and get a better sense of exactly how whiskey is made. Tuthilltown is also branching out, making corn whiskey, vodka (distilled from apples) and rum. I didn’t get a chance to try the Hudson River Rum, but the mention of Louisiana black strap molasses piqued my interest and I will definitely be looking for it! Anyone looking for a day-trip out of the city should consider making the trip.

Thanks to you and everyone who came to Tuthilltown yesterday and helped with the harvest. The staff at Tuthilltown Spirits were thrilled to meet so many of our friends and work side by side with them bringing in the rye.
