TASTING GLENFIDDICHJuly 2, 2009

Heather Greene was in Brooklyn to expound on the wonderful world of single-malt Scotch

glenglassesEarlier this week I headed down to the Jakewalk in Brooklyn to check out some single-malt scotch and expert in the field Heather Greene. After spending the past couple years in Scotland making music and learning all about the much-loved Scottish spirit, Heather is back in the States to spread the word on single-malts.

She walked us through a tasting of the Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18-year single malts. There year of the scotch was kept under wraps until the end of the tasting. We were encouraged to smell and taste first, then check out the year after we picked out favorite. My first choice was the 18-year which had woody and chocolate notes that pleased my palate. Second in the lineup was the 12-year, which has a ripe fruit profile that I also liked. That left the 15-year for me, which while lovely had a slight sweetness made it last in my book.

We were also treated to a Scotch cocktail designed by Ari Form, Spirits Director of the Jakewalk. While he and Heather noted single-malt Scotch can be hard to mix with, he found the right balance by mixing Glenfiddich with blanco tequila, velvet falernum and fresh orange juice.

The Bustos
1.5 oz Glenfiddich 12 year single-malt Scotch
.75 oz Blanco Tequila
.5 oz Velvet Falernum
.5 oz fresh orange juice
grated nutmeg for garnish
