INDY SPIRITS 2009June 28, 2009

It was all about the small guys on Wednesday at the Indy Spirits Expo!

On Wednesday I made a stop at the 2009 Independent Spirits Expo. I had to to complete a turbo tour as the clock was ticking for me to get to my bar shift, but I tried to get a look at everything. It’s definitely worth your time to check out local and artisanal distilleries, they might not have a marketing budget that puts them on your radar but its worth some research! Events like Indy Spirits are also fun because you get to meet the actual people that make the spirit, who can always express the passion and process behind a spirit better than a hired hand.
hudsonwkyI got to have a few sips of quality booze before I took off. First was a Hudson Single-Malt Whiskey by Tuthilltown Spirits. I’ve enjoyed their Baby Bourbon and Manhattan Rye before, and was impressed by this part of their portfolio. 92 proof but still smooth to drink. It’s aged in American Oak, giving it a rich, woody profile.
Next up I had a Pisco Sour with the Macchu Pisco folks. I was impressed with how foamy they got all these mini cocktails!

Macchu Pisco Sour
2 oz Macchu Pisco
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz simple syrup
.5 oz egg white
angostura bitters
Combine all ingredients and shake vigorously. Add ice and shake again. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with bitters over foam.

1 oz. Square One Cucumber
1/2 oz. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 oz. pineapple juice
2 sage leaves (one to muddle, one for garnish)
Madagascar vanilla bean cane sugar for glass rim
Muddle 1 sage leaf gently, so as just to bruise it. Add remaining ingredients and ice. Shake well. Rim 1/2 of a chilled martini glass with Madagascar vanilla bean cane sugar and strain cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a floating sage leaf.
Here’s a quick look at some other Indy Spirits that were in the building
