LET’S PRETEND IT’S SUMMER…January 30, 2009

It’s been beyond freezing the past few days here in good ole NYC, so this evening I played pretend I was livin’ it up in Rio for a couple hours.   Just turned up the heat and made caipirinhas!  Worked perfectly, I forgot about the cold until it was time to walk the dog.  I love lime-based cocktails, and this one is just simply refreshing.  Though it hails from Brazil, I actually had my first one in Berlin a few years ago.  While nobody comes close to imbibing as much cachaca as Brazilians, Germans are the second-biggest fans of this spirit distilled from sugarcane juice.   If you don’t have any cachaca, a good white rum (I like Flor de Cana 4-year) will work in this one too.

CAIPIRINHA

1 lime

1 sugarcube

3/4 simple syrup

2oz cachaca

Cut lime into 8ths and place in mixing glass, add sugarcube and muddle gently. Add syrup, cachaca and some cracked ice and give a few hard shakes.  Pour contents into rocks glass and forget the cold!

I love a good Caipirinha! There are a bunch of recipes for different variations on the drink using fresh fruit. My personal fav. is the Watermelon Smash Caipirinha:

2 oz. Leblon Cachaça
4 chunks Watermelon
1 tsp. superfine sugar

Muddle the watermelon and sugar in a shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and add Cachaça. Shake vigorously. Serve in a rocks glass. Garnish with a slice of watermelon.

It’s a great drink for a “sumer escape” in the middle of winter.

[...] Of course you’ll need some limes, Leblon and sugar to mix up some caiprihnas!  If you’ve got some fresh berries, like blackberry or raspberry throw those in for a  delicious twist.  As you know I’ve been drinking away the winter chill with caiprihnas, check my recipe here. [...]
